Costa Rica's Environmental Credentials Strengthened Again

In the 1990s Costa Rica became aware of the economic potential its own biodiversity and the importance of a conservation system. The first step was to put energy, environment, mines and water all under the authority of one Minister, allowing a new perspective on energy and ecology in the long term. Costa Rica has invested in renewable sources such as hydroelectric power, wind and geothermal energy, providing 90% of the country's energy needs. Even though oil was discovered in Costa Rican territory five years ago, drilling has been banned in order to preserve the conservation systems.

Twenty six beaches in Costa Rica's Guanacaste region have earned the Blue Flag environmental quality distinction this year. The Blue Flag distinction promotes the conservation of the country's beaches, bringing local people together to work for the sanitation and cleanness of the water for the benefit of the public. The Blue Flag distinction is awarded by a governmental authority and is a highly coveted award for Costa Rica beaches.

Costa Rica On Track For World Cup

Costa Rica has retained second place in the North and Central America and Caribbean World Cup qualifiers after a 1-0 victory over El Salvador. Costa Rica is just one point behind group leaders, the United States, and is set for the World Cup finals in South Africa next year.

Turtle Team Heading To Costa Rica

A group of conservation students from Western Oregon University is heading to Costa Rica to help La Tortuga Feliz, an organization that protects sea turtles. The group consists of six students and two staff advisers. The visit is part of the university's Alternate Break program which sends volunteers around the globe to participate in activities pro environment and service learning projects. The group will monitor the beach of Tortuguero National Park and the harbor of Limón, where many species of sea turtles visit to lay their eggs.

Lights Out For Costa Rica

San Jose is joining 2,500 other cities this weekend with a mass turning out all the lights for Earth Hour, between 8:30 and 9:30pm. Earth Hour is an annual event organized by the World Wildlife Fund to draw attention to global environmental issues.
