Costa Rican Intelligence Chief Roberto Solorzano has quit alter his deputy was accused of identity theft. Though not directly involved, Solorzano's deputy accessed a database so that he could create identity cards which could be used to order cheque books. The scandal has involved up to a dozen people and $400,000.

CONCACAF President Warner Praises Costa Rica on Trip to Central American Nation

Jack A. Warner, President of Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football, has praised the progress of Costa Rica in a visit to the country. In particular, he highlighted the success of the "Goals Project" on the outskirts of San José. "I have visited over 40 Goal Projects around the world," Warner stated. "This is definitely one of the most beautiful facilities that I have seen: a true example of progressive work in our confederation."

In about two months, Costa Rican taxis will feature meters that will "speak" the price of the fare. This new legislation comes about from a complaint by a blind man that complained he was being taken advantage of by taxi drivers. It seems that they would often raise the price of what he owed.

Rural Tourism Convention Held in Costa Rica

President Oscar Arias Sanchez of Costa Rica has called for a global effort to reduce military spending. Arias stated that 'The perverse logic that leads a poor nation to spend excessive sums on its armies, and not on its people, is exactly the antithesis of human security, and a serious threat to international security.' Costa Rica, well known for having no military of its own, will preside over the UN Security Council this month.

Costa Rican Airline Cuts Emissions

The world's first Carbon Neutral Airline "NatureAir" has further offset its emissions by joining a United Nations Environment Programme. Based in Costa Rica, NatureAir pledged in 2004 to offset all of its emissions in an effort to save the country's tropical rainforests. It became the first airline to join the Carbon Neutral Network which has set ambitious targets for cutting emissions of greenhouse gasses.

Costa Rica faces numerous economic advantages after strengthening ties with China. In mid-2007 Costa Rica cut 60 year trade ties with Taiwan in order to favor Beijing and trade with the Asian economic giant. In a visit to the parliament of Costa Rica, President Hu of China stated that increased cooperation would lead to "tangible benefits for [both of] our countries."

Final Costa Rican Bill Needed for CAFTA Passed

Costa Rica has finished the last step in order to join the Central American Free-Trade Agreement with the United States. The Bill was needed in order for Costa Rica to be part of this economic treaty that includes Nicaragua, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador and Guatemala. This treaty will help Intellectual Property rights and dissolve state monopolies in insurance and telecommunications.

Costa Ricans will now be able to share their ideas and innovations on a new Google community that was started by the Ministry of Science and Technology. This forum is going to be used to let Costa Ricans know about training classes, scholarships and free activities that will hopefully further education. Hopefully this initiative will allow more Costa Ricans to be connected to technological information.
