China and Costa Rica have started conversations towards a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that will benefit the two nations in this globalized era where goods of Costa Rica will have access to the Chinese market and vice versa. It is expected that by May 2010 the agreement will be set and functioning said, Marco Vinicio Ruiz, Costa Rican Trade Minister.

Bush Clears Way for Costa Rica to Join CAFTA

American President George W. Bush has given clearance for Costa Rica to officially be part of the Central American Free Trade Agreement with the U.S. and other Central American countries. Bush authorized a proclamation that makes this agreement effective between the United States and Costa Rica starting January 1st.

Costa Rica Promotes Greener Air Travel

Costa Rica Creates Ministry for Public Relations

A new Costa Rican ministerial post is being created by President Oscar Arias' administration in order to manage public relations. As the economy worsens, the popularity of the president is at stake. National Liberation Party lawmaker Mayi Antillon will be the communications minister by the middle of January. Arias' approval ratings have fallen to 44 percent from 64 percent in the last ten months.

JetBlue to Fly to Costa Rica

JetBlue is planning on starting flights from the US to Costa Rica. This would be the company's first flight to Latin America. Beginning in March, there will be round trip flights between Orlando and San Jose. JetBlue is planning on using its 100 seat Embraer E190 jets. As tourists from the United States make up a large percentage of visitors to the Central American country, Costa Rica welcomes flights from JetBlue.

The Costa Rican Government has called for the treasury to find $18 million in order to fund the modernisation of its identity card system. The call comes after dated technology used to produce the cards currently is becoming increasingly derelict and prone to malfunction. It is hoped that the new cards will feature electronic chips, a digital signature and fingerprints.
