From $399 €291 £249

60 species of mammals, 309 of birds, 57 different types of amphibians along with 30 of fish, thousands of species of plants growing next to 400 separate tree species; all of them waiting for your visit to the Tortuguero National Park, one of the most diverse regions of Costa Rica and the entire world.

This stretch of Costa Rica’s northern Caribbean coast, with its abundant profusion of wildlife and its distinct Afro-Caribbean culture and identity, is one of the country’s most spellbinding destinations. It is home to a bewildering number of habitats ranging from rainforest, to beach, to lagoon, all packed into a relatively small 300 square kilometers which means you can easily explore the entire area by boat and meet some of the park’s more reclusive residents.

Your visit to the park will be completed by the luxurious and relaxing Pachira Lodge which sits surrounded by a tranquil lagoon on the main canal linking the park with nearby Tortuguero village. The newest lodge in the park, Pachira boasts a private pool, a quality restaurant and a team of bilingual expert guides on hand to give you a warm introduction to this fascinating stretch of paradise. Daily connections from San Jose allow exploration of this entrancing region all year round.

Or, if guests are looking for a more laidback Costa Rica vacation destination, they can choose to stay at the Evergreen tourist lodge situated in the heart of the Tortuguero forest. This secluded lodge provides 26 private rooms, each sitting high atop wooden stilts so guests can fall asleep to the sounds of the rainforests’ water canals flowing right underneath their lodge and providing a one of a kind tropical experience. Rooms are beautifully decorated with bamboo furniture, comfortable beds and tropical themed-décor.  With amenities such as restaurant, bad an turtle-shaped pool, this Costa Rica lodge is the ideal destination during your tropical vacation.

Itinerary and Prices

Day 1: Arrival to Tortuguero - Pachira Lodge or Evergreen Lodges
  • You will be collected from your San Jose hotel before 6:30am, following a route to the Caribbean coast that skirts the Braulio Carrillo National Park, home to several volcanoes and large tracts of primary cloud forest before stopping for a typical Costa Rican breakfast of gallo pinto.
  • Subject to the season, you will make a short stop at a banana packing plant to observe the interesting process by which the fruit is washed, packaged and boxed in preparation for export around the world.
  • Arriving at the Caribbean you will take a boat transfer into the park itself, which has no road access and can only be reached by water. To get to the lodge you will glide through some of the park’s endless network of canals, channels and lagoons which provide a home to countless creatures, including the endangered manatee.
  • Arriving at the Pachira Lodge or Evergreen Lodges you will be welcomed by the friendly staff with a cocktail before sitting down for lunch at the hotel’s excellent restaurant and settling in to your comfortable surroundings.
  • After lunch you will take your first trip into the surrounding area, visiting the colorful Tortuguero village which has remained untouched and isolated from the outside world, enclosed by protected forest and unreachable by road. From the village you will make the short journey to the Caribbean Conservation Corporation’s museum devoted to the extraordinary life of the region’s most famous resident: the green sea turtle, whose habitat has been successfully protected by the CCC working in close partnership with local villagers.
  • Returning to the lodge for some rest and relaxation you will be able to make use of the hotel’s excellent facilities, indulge in its spa services or simply rest by the pool side before joining your fellow travelers for dinner at the restaurant, choosing from the wide ranging menu with both local and international specialties.
  • That evening you will have the option to join a night time tour back into the park to witness the spectacular sight of adult female green turtles returning to the beach of their birth to lay their eggs, before disappearing back into the ocean.*

*Note: The nesting tour is generally available between July-October and the most active season is between July and August. Availability will be confirmed upon arrival.

Day 2: Pachira Lodge or Evergreen Lodges
  • Dawn in the Caribbean, as the natural world comes to life, is the best way to see the region’s biodiversity in all its glory and so the lodge offers a boat tour through the channels during the first hours of daylight.
  • You will return in time to enjoy a delicious breakfast before setting out again on a walking tour to Tortuguero hill which boasts the most beautiful and awe inspiring vista of the entire park. Your bilingual and expert guide will help you spot the park’s hidden inhabitants and will explain why the park is considered one of the most important wildlife refuges in the country.
  • Returning back to the hotel for lunch you will spend the afternoon exploring more of the park’s aquatic maze, watching for monkeys, birds, exotic butterflies, caimans and iguanas. Returning to the lodge at dusk and after another fabulous meal at the restaurant, you will spend your final evening recounting stories of your adventures in the hotel bar or taking advantage of the leisure facilities that are at your disposal.
Day 3: Departure from Tortuguero
  • If you didn’t take the morning boat tour on day 2, you will have another chance to enjoy sunrise over the Caribbean before leaving the lodge.
  • Check-out is after a full breakfast, before you hit the road back to San Jose. Stopping for lunch you will be dropped off at your hotel by 3:30pm, from where you can continue your travels through Costa Rica or go on to one of our many other South American destinations.
