Mawamba Lodge 3D/2N

Tortuguero National Park / Mawamba Lodge (3 days / 2 nights) -
From $439 €334 £275

Costa Rica's northern Caribbean coast has an almost countless number of attractions compelling visitors to make the adventurous journey east towards this culturally vibrant and distinct stretch of country.

Perhaps top of that list is the coast's status as an important destination for another type of traveler altogether: the majestic green sea turtle. Females are known for their long migrations from feeding grounds in the open ocean back to the beaches from where they were hatched – often traveling many thousands of kilometers to lay their eggs.

It is here in the Tortuguero National Park that you can witness the culmination of this journey and observe the miracle of their epic lives on a night tour to search for nesting turtles. This profound and intimate experience is made all the more enjoyable by your stay in the Mawamba Lodge, a beach-side hotel with luxury facilities including pool, jacuzzi and nature trails that stretch off into the surrounding tropical rainforest.

Itinerary and Prices

Day 1: Arrival to Tortuguero - Mawamba Lodge
  • Your adventure begins between 6:00 and 7:00am when you are collected from your San Jose hotel to start the journey from the Central Valley towards the tropical Caribbean coast. At 8:00am you will be treated to a typical Costa Rican breakfast of gallo pinto at Rio Danta restaurant in Guapiles and by 11am you will arrive at the village of Cano Blanco for your boat connection to Tortuguero and Mawamba Lodge.
  • You will arrive just in time for lunch at the Lodge's first-rate restaurant which is renowned for both its international and local specialties. Lunch will be followed by a boat tour into Tortuguero village, including a visit to the Caribbean Conservation Corporation museum which explains how Tortuguero became the pre-eminent spot for turtle nesting in the Caribbean as well as providing a fascinating insight into the lives of these intriguing creatures.
  • Returning to the hotel by 5:00pm you'll have a couple of hours to yourself and a chance to enjoy the hotel's facilities and surroundings before dinner is served at 7:30pm.
  • After dinner you will have the option of a night-time tour into the National Park for an exploration of the nesting grounds and an intimate encounter with the turtles as they lay up to 200 eggs before retreating back to the safety of the ocean.*

*Note: The nesting tour is generally available between July-October and the most active season is between July and August. Availability will be confirmed upon arrival.

Day 2: Mawamba Lodge
  • To have the best chance of seeing some of the park's wildlife in its natural environment your second day begins early and coffee is served at 5:30am before you head out by boat along the famous Tortuguero Canals, built in the 1960s to connect the area's numerous narrow lagoons that are rich in wildlife both above and under the waterline.
  • You will return to the lodge for a full breakfast before departing by boat to a stretch of jungle in the lodge grounds where you will take a guided hike along a hidden jungle trail with a bilingual guide helping you to spot the forest’s secretive inhabitants.
  • Returning at noon for lunch you will spend the afternoon on another stretch of waterway, further exploring the entrancing network of lagoons and the monkeys, birds, butterflies, caimans and iguanas that inhabit them.
  • You'll have a couple of hours to relax in the hotel before dinner is served at 7:30pm. As on day 1, there is an optional night-time tour back into the Park to observe nesting turtles.*

*Note: The nesting tour is generally available between July-October and the most active season is between July and August. Availability will be confirmed upon arrival.
