Tortuguero Tours: Manatus Lodge

Tortuguero National Park / Manatus Lodge (2 days / 1 night) -

Tortuguero tour photo, Costa Rica tours, Costa Rica photos

The Caribbean coast can feel a world apart from the rest of Costa Rica – and with good reason. It was only thirty years ago that paved roads connected the east coast to the rest of the country. As a result of this relative isolation, its inhabitants have managed to retain a vibrant Afro-Caribbean identity, accompanied by ever-present reggae and an exciting, rich cuisine.

Along with its distinct culture, the northern Caribbean also contains a number of officially protected coastal ecosystems which are home to enormous quantities of wildlife. With vast tracts of rainforest, mangrove forest, endless coastlines, and living coral reefs all competing for your attention, nature loving travelers who make the effort to visit this isolated stretch of country are rewarded handsomely.

At the heart of this wild and fascinating region lies Tortuguero National Park, one of the world's most important breeding grounds for the green sea turtle. The park also boasts miles of mangrove forest concealing an audacious collection of life including iguanas, monkeys, and manatee. Exploring this coastal wilderness is made easy by the Manatus VIP hotel where luxurious rooms and an international restaurant reflect the inspirational beauty of your surroundings.

Itinerary and Prices

Day 1: Arrival to Tortuguero - Manatus Lodge

The journey is often as important as the destination, and this is especially the case as you travel by road from your hotel in San Jose towards the coast, weaving through the peaks of the Cordillera Central, skirting the Volcanoes Poas and Irazu before descending to sea level and making a stop for breakfast in Guapiles between 8:00 and 9:00am. Arriving at the tiny village of Cano Blanco by 11:00am, you will take a boat transfer to the Manatus hotel where the staff will welcome you with a cocktail and a smile while you make yourself at home in the tranquil and luxurious hotel.
After lunch in the hotel's renowned restaurant you will take a two hour trip into Tortuguero village, a relaxed jungle settlement accessible only by air or water. From the village it's a short drive to the Caribbean Conservation Corporation's turtle museum and visitor center, where you can hear about the success of recent conservation projects to protect the nesting grounds for over 20,000 turtles. To round off your first day on the Caribbean you'll enjoy a first-class dinner at the Manatus Afro-Caribbean fusion restaurant and relax in the hotel's sumptuous surroundings and facilities.

Note: All tours are weather dependent and their order may be switched according to the conditions. The nesting tour is generally available between July-October and the most active season is between July and August. Availability will be confirmed upon arrival.

Day 2: Manatus Lodge and departure from Tortuguero

You’ll have an early start to get the best chance of observing some of the abundant wildlife in the tropical paradise that surrounds the hotel. A professional and bilingual guide will help you spot some of the intriguing and rare creatures that hide within the mangroves. You will return to the hotel for a full Costa Rican breakfast before checking out and setting off for San Jose. You will stop for lunch in Guapiles and arrive at your hotel in San Jose by 3:30pm. From San Jose  you can continue your travels through Costa Rica or go on to one of our many other South American destinations.
