Gulf of Papagayo

You will be greeted at the airport and taken on an enjoyable journey through some of the most spectacular Costa Rican landscapes on the way to your relaxing hotel in the Gulf of Papagayo.

After a delicious breakfast at your hotel, you will make the journey to Rincon de la Vieja, an active volcano that lies amidst lush forest and is surrounded by numerous other volcanic peaks.

The volcano itself is more than 150 square miles with a large number of fumaroles and hot springs on its slopes. Its most recently eruption was in February 1998 but is currently considered gently active and not dangerous.

The name, Rincon de la Vieja, means the old woman's corner; according to locals, the indigenous people named the volcano after an old witch on top of the mountain who sent columns of smoke into the air when she was angry. Another version says it was a kind old woman on the same spot and the smoke was from her cooking fire as she prepared meals for weary travelers.

The spectacular hike starts in the tropical moist forest and as you climb, continues into low wet forest where the trees are covered with epiphytic mosses and fungi. There are 257 species of birds that have been recorded and a great number of insect species; the park protects the largest population of wild purple orchid, Costa Rica’s national flower.

After your invigorating hike and nature tour, we will shuttle you back to your fabulous hotel in ‘Parrot’s Gulf’ where you will have the rest of the evening to relax in luxury.

Following a full breakfast in your hotel, you will have the rest of the day to spend at your leisure. We highly recommend including one of our additional excursions or activities from the list below in order to complete your Papagayo adventure!

After a final hearty breakfast, we transfer you to the airport where you may continue your journey in Costa Rica or go on to one of our many South American destinations, or return home.
