Costa Rica Packages: Jungle Adventure

Special 6: San Jose - Tortuguero - Corcovado (9 days / 8 nights)
From $1,389 €1,014 £866
Details for your unforgettable Costa Rica travel package taking you through the lush jungles and city streets offered by Costa Rica for Less

One of the biggest draws for any Costa Rica vacation is the country’s astonishing abundance of rainforest and jungle, as well as the myriad of creatures that call these fascinating ecosystems home. This tour will take you into the heart of the two most important Costa Rica rainforest destinations: Tortuguero National Park, world famous as a turtle nesting spot and for its never ending mangrove swamps, canals and lagoons, and Corcovado National Park, the most isolated stretch of protected forest in the country which is home to no less than 8 distinct habitats and 13 separate ecosystems. The sheer volume of natural life in these two national parks is overwhelming; endangered turtles, manatee, scarlet macaws, resplendent quetzals, jaguars, pumas, snakes, tapirs, crocodiles, giant anteaters, monkeys, sloths and peccaries; in fact, the list is virtually endless. Completing this adventure into Costa Rica’s wild side are no less than three returns to the country’s more sedate capital, San Jose, where you’ll be able to rest, relax and take in the city’s more cultivated treats such as its excellent museums, theatre, dining and nightlife.

Itinerary and Prices

Day 1: Arrival to San Jose

You will be picked up from the airport and enjoy the city scenes as you are transferred to one of our many fine San Jose hotels in the thriving heart of the Central Valley. You will have some free time to explore the city, or take part in one of our many excursions below including a city tour of San Jose. If you would like to book an organized tour, please review the optional packages below or speak to one of our Costa Rica travel experts.

Day 2: Transfer to Tortuguero

After breakfast at your comfortable San Jose hotel you will leave the Costa Rica capital to set off on a journey through the Central Valley, skirting the impressive Poas and Irazu Volcanoes before descending to sea level and approaching the beautiful Caribbean coast.

Arriving at the Caribbean you will take a boat transfer to your lodge in Tortuguero National Park, which has no road access and can only be reached by water. To get to the lodge you will glide through some of the park’s endless network of canals, channels and lagoons which provide a home to countless creatures, including the endangered manatee.

After lunch you will take your first trip into the surrounding area, visiting the colorful Tortuguero village which has remained untouched and isolated from the outside world, enclosed by protected forest and unreachable by road. From the village you will make the short journey to the Caribbean Conservation Corporation’s museum devoted to the extraordinary life of the region’s most famous resident: the green sea turtle, whose habitat has been successfully protected by the CCC working in close partnership with local villagers.

Returning to the lodge for some rest and relaxation you will be able to make use of the hotel’s excellent facilities, indulge in its spa services or simply rest by the pool side before joining your fellow travelers for dinner at the restaurant.  The lodge´s restaurant offers a wide ranging menu with both local and international specialties.

That evening you will have the option to join a night time tour back into the park to witness the spectacular sight of adult female green turtles returning to the beach of their birth to lay their eggs, before disappearing back into the ocean.*

*Note: The nesting tour is generally available between July-October and the most active season is between July and August. Availability will be confirmed upon arrival.

Day 3: Tortuguero National Park Tour

Dawn in the Caribbean, as the natural world comes to life, is the best way to see the region’s biodiversity in all its glory.  It is highly suggest that you take advantage of the lodge´s offered boat tour through the channels during the first hours of daylight.

You will return in time to enjoy a delicious breakfast before setting out again on a walking tour to Tortuguero hill which boasts the most beautiful and awe inspiring views of the entire park. Your bilingual and expert guide will help you spot the park’s hidden inhabitants and will explain why Tortuguero National Park is considered one of the most important wildlife refuges in Costa Rica.

You will return to the hotel for lunch and then spend the afternoon exploring more of the park’s aquatic maze, watching for monkeys, birds, exotic butterflies, caimans and iguanas. Returning to the lodge at dusk and after another fabulous meal at the hotel restaurant, you will spend your final evening in Tortuguero recounting stories of your adventures in the hotel bar or taking advantage of the leisure facilities that are at your disposal.

Day 4: Transfer to San Jose

You will enjoy one last full breakfast at your excellent Tortuguero lodge before you make the transfer back to the Central Valley and San Jose. You will be taken to your comfortable San Jose hotel and will have the remainder of the day to explore this thriving city. San Jose is well known as the most stable and prosperous city in Central America and the Costa Rican capital offers its visitors endless attractions including the best museums, theatres and nightlife in the country. You can book an organized tour with Costa Rica for Less or wander on your own.  Why not treat yourself in one of San Jose’s many fine international restaurants while you are there?

Day 5: Transfer to Corcovado

Your Costa Rica adventure continues with a 40 minute flight to Corcovado, an isolated and wild national park on the Osa Peninsula. You will complete your journey to your lodge by boat, passing the largest mangrove swamp in Costa Rica.  This mangrove is home to such wildlife as northern jacanas, boat-billed herons, purple gallinules, black-bellied tree ducks, roseate spoonbills and white ibis. Arriving at the lodge in time for lunch, you will have the afternoon to yourself, exploring the surroundings or enjoying the beach before dinner is served.

Day 6: Corcovado National Park Tour

The full day tour of this captivating park begins immediately after breakfast when you will take a short boat trip into Corcovado National Park.

After disembarking you will follow a forest trail up the Rio Pargo. As the jungle unfolds in front of you, you will observe an astounding density of tree life, supporting countless species of epiphytic plants including orchids, bromeliads, ferns, mosses and even other small trees. Almost 200 feet above your head, in Costa Rica´s highest canopy, monkeys, agoutis, sloths and other wildlife will watch you pass and your expert guide will help you spot them hiding among the branches.

By noon you will return to the beach to enjoy a picnic in the shade of a mango tree while marveling at the beautiful ocean vistas in front of you.

After lunch you will follow another river towards a set of pristine waterfalls where crystal-clear water cascades through this tropical Eden. After some time enjoying the natural beauty and cooling off in the water, you will make your return journey to the hotel by boat.

Day 7: Isla del Cano National Park Tour

Once again, you’ll make an early start after breakfast at the lodge. An hour long boat trip whisks you across the 10 mile stretch of water between mainland Costa Rica and Isla Del Cano, renowned not only for its abundance of marine life but also for the perfectly carved granite spheres that were left by pre-Columbian civilizations.

Your guide will lead you on a hike to view remnants of this vanished culture, while also pointing out the noticeable natural variations between the island and the mainland.

After enjoying a picnic lunch on the beach you can swim in the clear waters, soak up some sun, or visit other parts of this enigmatic island. Later in the afternoon, you will re-board your boat for the journey back to your lodge.  Along the way you will have the chance to spot dolphins darting across the water along side you and an opportunity to take in the beauty of Costa Rica.  At your lodge, you will have a chance to unwind in its relaxing environment and enjoy a scrumptious dinner in its excellent restaurant.

Day 8: Transfer to San Jose

After a full breakfast, you will have some time to enjoy the beautiful beach before your transfer back to San Jose. You will be returned to your fine San Jose hotel and will have the remainder of the day to enjoy the hotel’s facilities or carry on exploring the city.  If you would like to book an organized tour, please review the optional packages below or speak to one of our Costa Rica travel experts.
