You will be greeted at the airport and then taken on a delightfully scenic journey to your relaxing Santa Elena hotel nestled in the cloud forest, a truly mystical environment full of lush flora and fauna. After an early start and full breakfast at your comfortable Costa Rica hotel, you will be taken on one of Costa Rica’s most biologically diverse natural history walks. Your early start will give you the best chance of catching some of the forest’s many inhabitants in their natural habitat including blue quetzals and bell-birds soaring above the trees and iridescent hummingbirds buzzing around you in their search for nectar.

Such an astonishing array of natural life is possible thanks to the forest’s unique position along the continental divide, the meeting place for the vast ecosystems of North and South America. The resulting combination of climatic and geographic factors create temperature and humidity gradients which change dramatically over relatively short distances creating a unique ecosystem for you to explore.

After breakfast at your Monteverde hotel you will set off on the journey down from the cloud forests and onto the Nicoya Peninsula, enjoying some breathtaking scenery on the way as you travel to Costa Rica´s infamous Tamarindo. After a relaxed breakfast in your Tamarindo hotel you will be taken to the stunning Palo Verde National Park, a 45 acre stretch of wetland sanctuary that lies at the head of the Gulf of Nicoya, acting as a basin for all the region’s rivers. Bisected by waterways and dotted with limestone hills, the Park is home to 13 distinct habitats including evergreen forests, grassland, marshes and mangrove swamps. As a result, Palo Verde is one of the preeminent Costa Rica wildlife spotting destinations, with a great ecological diversity waiting for the adventurous traveler.  It is also one of the most important marshlands in Central America and home to many endangered species. 

Birds are the biggest attraction at Palo Verde National Park; in the wet season the floodwaters of the Tempisque River spread to form extensive marshes that welcome migrant birds from across the Americas. Large numbers of aquatic birds can be seen such as: grebes, cormorants, anhinga, herons, jabirus storks, ibises, spoonbills, falcons, caracaras and jacanas. The mammal fauna is equally rich and visible, particularly during the dry season when peccaries, armadillos, jaguarondis, coatis, agoutis, deer, and monkeys are attracted to the water holes.

Your full-day Palo Verde National Park tour includes a mid-day lunch and in the late afternoon you will return to your quality Tamarindo hotel to spend the evening at your leisure.
