Arenal Volcano: Costa Rica’s Geological Gem

Perhaps one of the most visited spectacles of Costa Rica, is the Arenal Volcano. While many are attracted to the Central American nation for its serene beaches and lush rainforests, the Arenal Volcano captivates both experienced geologists and young earth scientists alike! Travelers of all ages from all over the world come to Costa Rica to see this active volcano with their own eyes.

Part of the Arenal Volcano National Park, the Arenal Volcano is 5400 feet (1650 meters) above sea level and overlooks Lake Arenal. The daily small eruptions attract those who want to see the power of Mother Nature. As long as one stays in designated perimeters, this is a safe and enjoyable activity for visitors to the Central American country.

From different sides of the volcano, lava will fall of the side of the volcano like wax from a burning candle. While this is truly a special sight, the small daily eruptions of glowing lava are not the only amazing things to see when gazing at this incredible volcano. Occasionally, tourists are lucky enough to see pyroclastic avalanches – truly a spectacle of hot gas and rock rushing down the side of the volcano.

The region’s renowned hot springs, including the world famous Tabacon Hot Springs, have the volcano to thank for the water’s heat. Enjoy a relaxing massage in one of La Fortuna’s spas or a tropical fruit drink in one of the hot spring’s bars. Often couples say that the hot springs are the country’s most romantic setting.

For those who are more interested in thrills, the La Fortuna region also has its share of adventure activities. Water rafting and zip lining are activities that seem to captivate those who are interested in seeing the beauty and wonders of the rainforest in a unique and exciting way! Other areas to explore are the local swimming spots with waterfalls, but this may mean a fun 15-20 minute hike down to the cataracts. The Arenal Volcano is a truly an exceptional destination, offering travelers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience being close to an active volcano while enjoying Costa Rica’s lush scenery.
