Tamarindo Pictures

The Costa Rica Pacific northwest coast is world famous for its idyllic weather conditions and stunning stretches of endless, white sand beaches. Of all the region’s beach paradises, Tamarindo is by far the most sought-after destination; no surprise given the area’s two national parks, an endless array of thrilling outdoor activities and a huge choice of hotels and restaurants in the thriving fishing town Tamarindo.

Once a humble fishing village, the resort town of Tamarindo still manages to report record marlin, tuna and sailfish catches off its beautiful coast and offers enormous opportunities for sport fishing enthusiasts. Other activities include surfing, swimming, snorkeling, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, jet skiing, boogie boarding, horseback riding and scuba diving. Tamarindo is also home to Hacienda Pinilla, one of the finest golf courses in Central America.

Despite its well-deserved explosion in popularity, Tamarindo has still managed to maintain the Tico spirit, boasting a vibrant, multicultural community. Art galleries and pottery stores display the works of local artisans and offer the perfect keepsakes to take home. Local cuisine thrives with plenty of bakeries, an outdoor vegetable market as well as more than 40 restaurants with numerous gastronomical selections, certain to suit any palette. Furthermore, the many bars and discos in the area make for an energetic nightlife.

Neighboring Playa Conchal has been described as “the most beautiful beach in Costa Rica” and with its pristine white sands and brilliant, deep turquoise waters, it’s easy to understand why. The beautiful sands are formed by the erosion of millions of pearly sea shells and the clear waters offer perfect opportunities for snorkeling and diving.

The peaceful Playa Langosta lies just one mile south of the bustling Tamarindo village. The exotic rocky shoreline beach offers great surf as well as upscale accommodations. Many visitors come here in order to escape the lively atmosphere of Tamarindo and thanks to its intense natural beauty, Playa Langosta has become another highly popular destination.

  • ACCESS ROUTES

If Tamarindo and surrounding destinations are your first and last stops in Costa Rica, you may opt to fly in and out from the Liberia International Airport. Although Tamarindo and Playa Langosta are easily accessible by road from most regions in Costa Rica, the best way to get there is with a domestic flight to Tamarindo Domestic Airport which is just outside of town. Playa Langosta is located just 10 minutes from Tamarindo Domestic Airport and around 50 minutes from Liberia International Airport.

  • ACCOMMODATION

Tamarindo is an extremely popular tourist destination with a well-developed tourism infrastructure. Therefore, you will find an array of accommodations to suit every budget. However, if you are looking for luxury, the majority of the high-end hotels are found south of Tamarindo or dispersed along the coast of Playa Langosta.

  • WHEN TO GO

October to March is the best time to visit Tamarindo if you are on the lookout for nesting leatherback turtles. However, if surfing is your thing, you will want to visit starting in late June when the season warms up or September and October for the peak time which brings the largest and fastest waves. Booking in advance is highly recommended during these peak times as well as Semana Santa (the week before Easter) and June-July US and European summer vacations.

  • HOW LONG

Whether you are looking for some peace and quiet or adventure, you will find it in Tamarindo and Playa Langosta. As always, your length of travel will depend on your personal travel preferences and one of our highly-trained Travel Advisors will be happy to help!

The name, Rincon de la Vieja, means the old woman's corner; according to locals, the indigenous people named the volcano after an old witch on top of the mountain who sent columns of smoke into the air when she was angry. Another version says it was a kind old woman on the same spot and the smoke was from her cooking fire as she prepared meals for weary travelers.
