Monteverde Pictures

In the northern region of the Puntarenas province in the Cordillera de Tilarán, lay the antiquated rural towns of Monteverde and Santa Elena. A beautiful mix of history and nature, Ticos and Quakers have lived hand in hand here for decades and the customs of the era can still be observed today.

A Tico village, Santa Elena was formed when Costa Rican families from the town of Juntas, gave up gold mining in order to begin a rural life of logging and farming. Here you will find the incredible Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve, a bit smaller than the reserve in Monteverde but an excellent stopover when exploring everything that the biologically intense region has to offer. The village features a tiny downtown area with a nice array of accommodations as well as a bus stop, bank, health clinic, general store, souvenir store, post office, police station, supermarket, bar, internet cafes and many reasonably priced eateries.

The main attraction of the area is the Quaker settlement of Monteverde (‘green mountain’ in Spanish), home to the famous Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. After being imprisoned for refusal of the 1949 Korea war draft, almost 50 people from the pacifist religious group left the US in search of green spaces, peace and tranquility. Naturally the recently demilitarized Costa Rica and the misty green Monteverde was the perfect choice. Untouched by modernity, Monteverde remains a Quaker dairy farming community and produces the finest cheeses in Costa Rica. Don’t forget to sample these tasty treats on your visit to the ‘green mountain.’

The main attractions of these towns are their surrounding reserves which offer views of both the Caribbean and Pacific Oceans. Around 700 feet above sea level, the cloud forests sustain a vast array of flora and fauna. The misty and surreal environment is a true wildlife sanctuary with more than 2,000 species of plants and trees, 100 species of mammals, over 400 species of birds and approximately 1,200 species of amphibians and reptiles.

Named “the place” to view one of Central America’s most famous birds – the resplendent quetzal by National Geographic, bird watching is one of the area’s most popular pastimes. While there are trails for hiking the reserves, the best experiences will be derived from a skywalk or rappelling canopy tour. Horseback riding is also a popular activity in the area.

  • ACCESS ROUTES

The best way to get to Santa Elena and Monteverde is to fly into the capital San Jose and then take the 4-hour journey to Santa Elena and Monteverde, enjoying all of the majestic scenery along the way.

  • ACCOMMODATION

Plenty of luxury and budget hotels, lodges and accommodations can be found in these highly visited areas.

  • WHEN TO GO

January to April and July are the most popular months to visit; therefore, advanced reservations are highly recommended for these times. One of Latin America’s top music festivals, the annual Monteverde Music Festival, has varying dates (between January and February) and is worth planning your trip around. The rainy season is from May to November and while prices may be lower during this time, there are fewer hiking opportunities available as ground conditions are not optimum. The best time for birding is February – May when flocks of birds migrate and nest in the area.

  • HOW LONG

As a nature lover’s paradise, many will not want to leave until they have every species checked off in their nature guide. Others may quickly soak in the natural beauty but be in a rush to head to the coast. One of our highly-trained Travel Advisors will be happy to help you plan your stay in Santa Elena and Monteverde!

Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve Night Hike Tour:

Monteverde Cloud Forest is teeming with creatures of all shapes and sizes, but chances are they don’t keep the same hours as you. In fact, most of the forest’s inhabitants follow nocturnal or crepuscular (twilight) lifestyles. For this reason we offer a nature hike through the reserve during the twilight and early evening hours, between 5 and 7pm when most creatures emerge to begin their day. Your expert guide will help you identify the call signs of the forest’s 170 bird species, as well as track the tell tale clues left by its many mammal species; the two-toes sloth or the prehensile-tailed porcupine for instance, while also keeping a sharp eye out for the smaller critters that call the forest home – spiders, grasshoppers and snakes.

The hike will open up another world before your very eyes, allowing you to experience the eerie night time sounds of the natural world coming to life, leaving you with lasting memories of a truly wild and untamed environment.

You will see the large processing location where the cooperative receives the beans from the farmers and prepares the coffee for export or roasting. Along the way you will also visit a group of women in San Luis who recycle paper products the old fashioned way by breaking apart the paper, blending the pulp and pressing it into a variety of products such as bags, cards and notebooks.  Finally you will be brought back to the retail coffee shop where you will be invited to taste the variety of roasts and perhaps further support the cooperative by purchasing some of the roasted beans to bring back home for your friends and family.

This exciting tour begins only 3 kilometers away from the town of Santa Elena in Monteverde; here you will be welcomed before being organized with the necessary safety requirements for the tour (helmets, rain coats, safety equipment).

A number of important points will be explained: the ATV’S peculiarities, driving skills needed, average speed, guide signal tour, duration and safety procedures. You will also be able to experience terrain irregularities similar to ones you will face on the drive. At the practice stage, should you not feel comfortable handling the ATV on your own, you will have the option to ride with one of the guides.

After practice and preparation, the real adventure begins! The tour has an approximate duration of two hours across a 20km journey that traverses between private trails and quiet public roads. Depending on the weather conditions and the participant’s skills the route may be adjusted.

Along the tour you will be able to observe abundant flora and fauna which is all native to the region - peculiar given that this is on the continental divide between Central and South America.
