San Jose Pictures
As a warm and inviting cosmopolitan capital offering an extraordinary paradisiacal climate, each year San Jose attracts around 2 million visitors from across the globe and numerous foreigners (primarily North Americans) proudly call themselves “Josefinos” and the beautiful Central Valley home.
The capital of democratic and peaceful Costa Rica rests high (1,253 meters/3,770 feet) above sea level in the lush Central Valley that is encircled by cloud-topped volcanoes and awe-inspiring mountain ranges. The metropolitan area is home to approximately one million people and is bordered by many upscale suburbs that hug the gentle foothills.
Quite young in comparison to other Central American capitals, San Jose was founded in 1738 making it more contemporary than other colonial cities. While San Jose experienced a building boom in the 1950s and 60s, the heart of the historic center still features some charming historical buildings. Although lacking the colonial feel of most Latin American cities, San Jose is proud of its unique “Caribbean Victorian” style of architecture which is characterized by turn of the century wooden-frames, weatherboards, elegant wrap-around porches, gentle pastel colors and tin roofs that clatter in the rain.
In a four-block area that bisects the heart of the capital, you will find the National Theater; Plaza de la Cultura; Parque Central; the Cathedral; and the Gold Museum along with an extensive pedestrian walkway packed with shopping opportunities. San Jose is also Costa Rica’s cultural epicenter with numerous theater groups, museums, parks, a national symphony orchestra, cinemas and universities, all of which reflect the country’s unique multicultural heritage. It is also host to a thriving nightlife including numerous nightclubs, casinos, discos and fine restaurants.
From San Jose you can enjoy numerous day trips and short tours direct from the city, or otherwise use it as the starting point for your Costa Rica holiday with easy onward travel to the country’s highlights: Tortuguero, Puerto Viejo, Jaco, Arenal volcano, Tamarindo, Manuel Antonio National Park and Monteverde.
The most convenient way to travel into San Jose is by air. The Juan Santamaria International Airport is only 20 minutes from the downtown area. San Jose serves as the country’s public transport hub and you’ll begin there in order to reach most Costa Rica destinations. If traveling between several destinations, you will find that it is often easier to travel through San Jose rather than find transportation directly to another region.
There is a vast array of lodging options in San Jose, with accommodations to suit every budget. Selections range from the most economic area of downtown San Jose to the mid-range hotels of Barrio Amon and La Sabana. Hotels in the wealthy suburbs of Los Yoses, San Pedro, and Escazu offer the highest quality accommodations.
San Jose offers near perfect weather year-round with temperatures between 70 and 75°F. The rainy season lasts from May to October and is characterized by late afternoon and evening showers.
While San Jose is not the premier Costa Rica vacation attraction, the city offers many cultural activities. San Jose also serves as a good “home base” for touring the small country with a slew of full-day adventures departing and returning daily. Depending on your travel preferences, we will help you to decide on the length of time for your San Jose visit.

Known by indigenous Costa Ricans as the "mountain of rumbling and trembling" Irazu soars 11,260 feet above sea level and spreads over 2,309 hectares. It is the highest peak of the Central Volcanic Range and the largest volcano in Costa Rica. As you ascend up into the mountains on your way to Irazu National Park, you will notice how the changing altitude effects the surrounding plant life which changes from large plantations of onions and carrots, to primary and secondary forests of white oak, to a paramo (high-altitude wet grasslands above the tree line) at the volcano's summit. On your way back to San Jose, you will drive through the former capital Cartago, which was destroyed by volcanic eruptions in 1723. You will visit the ruins of the old parish and the magnificent Basilica de Los Angeles, the country’s most important church.* *A visit to Orosi and The Lankester Gardens can be added to this tour or taken separately: Lankester Gardens is a showcase of the incredibly diverse local flora. This region, known as Guayabo National Monument, is Costa Rica's most important archaeological site and the country’s only named National Monument. The excavations at Guayabo have revealed a network of cobblestone causeways and streets, open and closed aqueducts, cisterns, stairways, mounds, petroglyphs, monoliths, tombs, and sculptures that belong to a pre-Columbian city, which was inhabited between 1000 B.C. and 1400 A.D.
