Arenal Pictures
Costa Rica’s top rated tourist destination, active Volcán Arenal towers over the charming and quiet town of La Fortuna de San Carlos. Lonely Planet proclaims that “even without an active volcano spewing smoke and fireworks overhead, the quiet, rural town of La Fortuna de San Carlos would be a relaxing place to kick back for a few days.”
Other than the famous Arenal Volcano, La Fortuna is home to the surging 230-foot high waterfall: La Catarata de la Fortuna. The short trek is worth a glimpse of the astounding cascade. The hot springs created by Arenal are another of La Fortuna’s key attractions. Tabacón Hot Springs are perhaps the most luxurious in the area; offering sumptuous vegetation, rare orchids and fabulous waterfalls, the setting is nothing less than picturesque.
Located just 6 miles from La Fortuna, Arenal Volcano (La Fortuna’s main attraction) sat dormant for approximately 400 years. On July 29, 1968, violent bursts of lava and ash began to explode from the massive volcano killing about 80 people and 45,000 cattle. While some weeks or months have seen very little or no activity, the picture-perfect conical shaped Volcán Arenal has almost continually spewed molten rock and clouds of ash since 1968. The spectacular fireworks have attracted millions of moth-like tourists from across the globe.
La Fortuna is easily accessible by road from the capital city San Jose. Bicycle is a popular means of transportation once inside the town and many hotels rent them to their guests.
A bustling and thriving town, La Fortuna offers ample lodging with hotels and resorts to accommodate every budget. If your budget allows, the amazing resort spas surrounding the volcano which feature hot springs are well worth the investment! The main plaza area is the best in-town option for hotels offering some of the most superb views of the Arenal Volcano.
Travel to La Fortuna is most popular during the summer (dry season): December to April. However, this destination offers a comfortable year-round average temperature of 71°F (22°C). Also, mid-February brings two weeks of Fiestas de la Fortuna which includes bullfights, carnival rides, tasty food, crafts, tented discos and many gambling opportunities. It is suggested that accommodations be booked in advance during these peak months as well as June/July when which brings many vacationers from the US and Europe. Although, if you are looking to avoid crowds and save on lodging and can deal with more frequent rain and muddy roads, the wet season is perfect!
Depending on your trip style preferences, La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano can serve as a picturesque and serene escape or an adventure lover’s paradise with white water rafting, hiking, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, horseback riding, canopy tours, boat tours, etc. Offering a plethora of possibilities, your length of stay will depend on your personal travel needs.
