Manuel Antonio

Manuel Antonio Pictures

Taking its name from the indigenous Quepoa who once inhabited the area, Quepos is a world-renowned fishing village located on the central Pacific coast of Costa Rica. The provincial town boasts a delightful square on the beach front that is overflowing with restaurants, hotels, art galleries and shops. Festival times bring dancing, parades and concerts to the streets of Quepos.

The majority of tourists who visit the area are game fisherman in search of the Marlin, Sailfish, Snapper, Amberjack, Wahoo, Dorado, Yellowfin Tuna, Bigeye Tuna and Roosterfish that are found in abundance here. Quepos features inshore or offshore fishing as well as fly fishing. However, if fishing is not your thing, you can partake in one of the many other activities that the quiet town has to offer, such as: canopy tours, horseback riding, kayaking, rafting, and surfing.

Perhaps the biggest appeal of Quepos is its proximity to (4 miles south of) Manuel Antonio. Once an insignificant village, Manuel Antonio has become a nature and beach lover’s haven as well as one of the country’s top tourist destinations. Paradise at its finest, the legendary Manuel Antonio National Park is 1625 hectares of pristine beaches, tropical islands, a flourishing rainforest inundated with unique wildlife such as iguanas, monkeys (white-faced, howler, capuchin, and squirrel), sloths, coatimundis, over 350 species of birds, etc.

  • ACCESS ROUTES

The quickest and easiest way to access these areas is by flying into the Juan Santa Maria International Airport. Just three short hours from San Jose’s Central Valley, your journey to Quepos and Manuel Antonio will take you through the towns of Atenas, Orotina, Tarcoles, Jaco and Parrita.

  • ACCOMMODATION

Quepos boasts scores of modestly priced hotels, accommodations and luxury resorts. While Manuel Antonio is known as being one of the most exclusive areas in Costa Rica, budget lodging can be found. Due to Manuel Antonio’s small size hotels began building on the road to Manuel Antonio, cashing in on the breathtaking panoramic vistas. Next, high-end exclusive hotels began to take over. Budget inns are mainly found closer to the beach. Be aware that hotels located on the top of the hill may have steep steps. Almost all hotels offer off-season rates.

  • WHEN TO GO

The best time to tour Quepos and Manuel Antonio is during the dry season: between January and April; note that March and April can become sweltering. However, prime fishing season is from December to August. September is the wettest month. If you would like to visit Manuel Antonio National Park, bear in mind that numbers of visitors are limited to 600 per day (800 on Saturday and Sunday), and the park is now closed on Monday. If you would like to do your part to assist in the preservation of Manuel Antonio, please consider visiting in the “green” or wet season (May – December).

  • HOW LONG

Quepos and Manuel Antonio offer a plethora of activities that involve anything from sport fishing to nature hiking to surfing and everything in between! It is one of the most visited areas in Costa Rica and many visitors spend most of their trip here. One of our highly-trained Travel Advisors will be happy to help you decide your length of stay!

Excursions

Savegre River White Water Rafting:

Your trip begins early in the morning with a 4x4 ride into the “wilds” of Costa Rica’s tropical jungle with breathtaking scenery of more remote areas of the Savegre. The journey starts in “Silencio”; a little local village of thatched roof dwellings where you can enjoy a typical Tico breakfast after a “bumpy road” journey and before you paddle down the Savegre. Meander through the beautiful flora and fauna of the surrounding African Palm Plantations before you head off into the winding mountains to start the rafting leg of your journey.

The Savegre River provides Class II, III and IV rapids that are manageable in sturdy rafts that accommodate 2 to 6 people comfortably. Our guides stop at locally known swimming spots and breathtaking waterfalls, if the rafters want a break from paddling. On most trips, rafters will observe egrets, osprey, toucans, parrots, kingfishers, cormorants, and many other species local to this protected area of the primary tropical rain forest. After a steady 13-mile trip down the river, we wind our way back to the little village of “Silencio” where we will be greeted by a hot lunch “Tico Style” as well as local refreshments. Once fed, happy and well-traveled, our now experienced Savegre River rafters spend a leisurely trip home driving back to Manuel Antonio, to ponder on continuing a rafting experience on the Naranjo River or to savor the experiences of a day beautifully spent.

Naranjo River White Water Rafting:

The wild and ever-changing Naranjo River White Water Rafting challenge is recommended for physically fit adventure seekers and experienced rafters who are familiar with Class III and IV rapids. On this high-octane, half-day adventure, the trip begins when the Naranjo River drops steeply from the Costa Rican mountains and charges though pristine jungle gorges, then winds around rocky curves to take you on a wild, adventurous ride back to sea level waters.  While your internationally-trained, bilingual guides and safety kayakers work with you to navigate this exciting river, you’ll rapidly pass by stunning farmland, working cattle ranches and beautiful African Palm Plantations.

Unlike the Savegre River Adventure, the Naranjo River Rafting Trip packs all its punches in a 7 mile ride that keeps your adrenaline level high for several hours. Water levels can rise rapidly on this Costa Rican river, especially during the rainy season (May-October), which definitely brings the difficulty level up for any experienced rafter. After an adrenaline-kicking trip, enjoy local snacks and refreshments before heading back to Manuel Antonio.

Watch sloths and numerous species of monkeys travel through the tree canopy, hunt for nocturnal silky anteaters and several types of non-poisonous snakes resting in the mangroves and listen to the songs of the various marine birds as they glide over your kayak curiously looking for adventure. Whenever you want, stop and enjoy some local fresh fruits and refreshments as you pause to savor your adventures.
