Located about 125 miles east of San Jose and 35 miles South of Puerto Limón, Puerto Viejo de Talamanca lies on the southern shores of the Caribbean Sea and is truly a beach lover’s paradise. Inundated with tropical flora and fauna, Puerto Viejo is a pulsating beach town with stunning gold sand beaches and sparkling blue waters which have made it a premier vacation hot spot. Puerto Viejo has transformed itself from a calm fishing village into a young and hip surfing mecca as one of the world’s top rated surfing destinations, featuring the renowned Salsa Brava wave that attracts thousands of surfers from across the globe annually.

Due to the rough waters, swimming may not be advised. Nevertheless, surfing is not the only offering at Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. There are also a host of activities such as: horseback tours of the area, snorkeling, diving, mountain biking, kayaking, boogie boarding or just simply relaxing on the white sand while soaking in the rays and the sweet sounds of reggae. Nearby towns also feature exciting attractions such as the Cahuita National Park, Talamanca Indian Reserve and Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge which are definitely worth a visit

Puerto Viejo provides a laidback and relaxing atmosphere with a special mélange of Latino, Afro-Caribbean and Bribri indigenous cultures. However, the unique combination also makes for an extremely lively nightlife with a wide variety of the most happening bars, discos and restaurants. Furthermore, there is an abundance of shopping opportunities which offer the perfect mementos of this magical destination.

  • ACCESS ROUTES

Puerto Viejo is accessible mainly by bus. If driving, it is important to note that the majority of roads leading to Puerto Viejo are in a fairly poor state with the only one paved road from Puerto Limón to Manzanillo. However, the dirt paved streets of Puerto Viejo offer a rustic charm. Once in the town, bicycle is a preferred means of transportation and you will find a multitude of rental shops.

  • ACCOMMODATION

With a flourishing Tourism Industry, infrastructure is growing and it is now possible to find accommodations that meet any budget..

  • WHEN TO GO

When you go will depend on the particular leisure activities that you are seeking. The waves are generally at their peak here from December to March, and there is a miniseason for surfing in June and July. Swimmers may wish to visit from late March to May, and in September and October, when the sea is at its calmest. Temperatures average around 86°F (30°C) year-round, with the highest rainfall in July, and from November to January. This area gets plenty of rain, just like the rest of the coast (Sept-Oct are your best bets for sun, although it's not guaranteed even in those months).

  • HOW LONG

Puerto Viejo is an adventure lover’s paradise that offers prime surfing as well as horseback tours, snorkeling, diving, mountain biking, kayaking and boogie boarding. Your time in Puerto Viejo will be dependant on how long you choose to enjoy these activities.

Natura Park Tour:

Of the estimated indigenous population in Costa Rica, 65-75% live in Talamanca, the most rugged area of the country. Indigenous groups of Talamanca include the Bribris, The Cabecar and the Guaymies.

You will follow the trail – like a secret passage – that will take you into the forest, surrounded by the singing of the crested mandibled toucan, the mealey parrot and the bay wrens as well as many other signs of dozens of tropical birds. In the center of the forest, we have created special conditions so that you can observe many of the poisonous frogs which inhabit the area. Surrounded by beautiful bromeliad and water as complement for their habitat, you will also be able to watch many other frog species.

It is here, in the midst of the jungle, that you will discover an indigenous village. Your Tour Guide will give an explanation of the meaning of the different constructions, and will discuss the local traditions. The locals will show you beautiful handcrafts including furniture made of wood with animal forms, unique of this culture and in The House of Handcrafts you will have the opportunity to purchase these very original souvenirs.

Your last stop will be to The Medicinal Botanical Garden. The indigenous people have inherited a lot of experience with medicinal plants and this botanical garden will allow you to learn about some of the plants used in the Talamanca highlands.

Cahuita National Park & Puerto Vargas Tour:

The largest town in the South of Limon is Cahuita. A four mile natural trail leads from Cahuita to Puerto Vargas, beyond Cahuita Point. The walk takes about two hours, but hikers will definitely want to stop frequently for a picnic, for a swim in warm Caribbean waters, to gape at the Howler Monkeys in the tree top high overhead.

The National Park was formed to protect one of the last living reefs in Costa Rica. Unfortunately, sedimentation from expanding banana plantations, deforestation in the Talamanca Mountains and the last earthquake have killed much of the reef close to the shore. Snorkelers can try their luck near Cahuita Point or Puerto Vargas. In these waters scientists have counted 35 species of coral, including elk horn, brain coral and Venus sea fan as well as 123 species of tropical fish. Snorkeling equipment is available and a delicious box lunch is included.

Within the lagoon habitat, one may observe large quantities of aquatic birds, including numerous herons, cormorants, and the flashy kingfisher. Local legend has it that early spottings of manatees where mistaken for the mythical half-woman, half-fish. However, the celebrity resident of the lagoon is an animal which is now rarely seen – the endangered Caribbean manatee- as it is an expert at hearing the slightest indication of a boat. The boat will stop for a short hike.

Visits to Rancho Grande, Volio waterfall and the KekoLdi Reserve are also included in this tour.
