Jaco Pictures
For years Playa Jaco was a weekend getaway for joséfinos who headed 2 hours west of the Central Valley in search of balmy waters, perennial surf, top-notch fishing and stress-free shore side surroundings. Nowadays Jaco caters mainly to a vast amount of foreign tourists who wish to enjoy a more relaxing lifestyle. Renowned for its excellent nightlife, Jaco boasts a casual ambiance full of amiable people.
The streets of Playa Jaco are overflowing with restaurants, bars, clubs and tiny shops. However, the main attraction at Jaco is the incredible surfing. Year-round, giant waves and internationally recognized breaks carry heaps of surfers to the shore and surfing lessons and board rentals are abundant here for the inspiring tablistas. While caution is advised when swimming in these rough waters, other activities in the area include sport fishing, sea kayaking and horseback riding.
While you are in the vicinity, we suggest that you visit the areas just north and south of the bustling beach town (such as Playa Hermosa). Here you will find cleaner and more striking beaches that offer panoramic views of the ocean. Just North of Jaco, the Carara Biological Reserve is also well worth a visit. As the nesting ground for Costa Rica's scarlet macaws, the reserve also features armadillos, otters, kinkajous and hundreds of species of tropical birds (just to name a few).
The 1-mile long Playa Jaco is easily accessible from most regions of the country. Your best option would be to fly into San Jose and then take the 2-hour trek to Jaco.
With a complex tourism infrastructure, there is no lack of hotels in Playa Jaco. The city was designed for the wealthy tourist and the party-going backpacker in mind. Thus, the buzzing beach town hosts an array of hotels and restaurants…closer inland or right on the ocean!
A true surfer’s paradise, the surf breaks in Jaco are consistent year-round. However, if you are not a surfer, you will want to visit January – March when rain is less likely. If you do happen to visit during the rainy season, you will be rewarded with cheaper accommodations and a truer Costa Rican ambiance. Keep in mind that September and October are the rainiest months and that advanced reservations are highly recommended for the peak season.
While Jaco is not one of Costa Rica’s most beautiful beaches, surfers and fisherman will delight in its offerings. Boasting the wildest nightlife in Costa Rica, club goers will not be disappointed either. Your length of stay will depend upon your personal travel wishes. One of our knowledgeable travel advisors will be happy to help you decide!

| Savegre River White Water Rafting: |
Your trip begins early in the morning with a 4x4 ride into the “wilds” of Costa Rica’s tropical jungle with breathtaking scenery of more remote areas of the Savegre. Meander through the beautiful flora and fauna of the surrounding African Palm Plantations before you head off into the winding mountains to start the rafting leg of your journey. The Savegre River provides Class II, III and IV rapids that are manageable in sturdy rafts that accommodate 2 to 6 people comfortably. Our guides stop at locally known swimming spots and breathtaking waterfalls, if the rafters want a break from paddling. On most trips, rafters will observe egrets, osprey, toucans, parrots, kingfishers, cormorants, and many other species local to this protected area of the primary tropical rain forest. After a steady 13-mile trip down the river, we wind our way back to the little village of “Silencio” where we will be greeted by a hot “Tico Style” lunch as well as local refreshments.
